The 6th edition of the Lemur Festival did indeed take place from October 25 to 29, 2019. Initiated by the GERP, which was celebrating its 25th anniversary, this annual event focused on the protection of this rare and endemic fauna. . The aim was to strengthen awareness campaigns already in place.
The 5 days of the festival were marked by scientific conferences concentrated on the valorization of these riches and the importance of their conservation despite the imminent dangers that threaten them day by day.
Apart from sensitization, this edition was marked by a special event dedicated to children. The latter had their share of animation because a large carnival was specially organized for them from the Ambohijatovo Garden to the Annex Stadium of Mahamasina. The goal was to awaken the love of children for these endemic animals, to motivate them to protect these natural riches and to be always proud of this unique biodiversity.
It should be noted that Madagascar currently has up to 112 species of lemurs, 17 of which are endemic. Their habitat is scattered all over the Big Island but most lemurs are concentrated in the East, in the heart of nature reserves and protected areas. In addition to the Maki Catta, we find Sifaka, Aye Aye and the famous Indri Indri, the largest lemur in the world and endemic to the Big Island.
