Each year, Australian and New Zealand photographers gather around the Mono Awards event, a prestigious black and white photography competition. Among the photos presented, one of them showed the Alley of Baobabs, a mythical place of the southwest region of Madagascar. It had the merit of receiving a prize in the category "Places".
The famous photo was titled "Boy with tire". That's how the Australian photographer Sharron Leppien called this shot on which we actually see a boy playing on the tire. The setting is simply beautiful: this toddler is captured in profile and around him, we can distinguish the great legendary baobabs that populate this path. The driveway in question and the big trees form the backdrop of this black and white photo.
This photo can be interpreted differently. But what is certain is that it highlights the authenticity of the place and the wealth of Malagasy biodiversity. The little boy playing the tire is only a figure. The baobabs at the imposing size want to be the stars of the cliché. Moreover, when looking at the photo for the first time, the eye is fixed directly on these trees shaped overturned bottles.
If the contest proposed two categories "Places" and "People", the photographer Sharron Leppien chose the first category to present "Boy with tire". The 9 juries made up of professional photographers from the magazines Capture Magazines and Australian Photography were conquered by the cliché. Responding to well-defined criteria, the artistic line and the graphic expression reported in this photo have surely convinced them.
